Adoption Fee

All our adoption fees are not for profit but rather to recover actual vet costs and rescuing.

Adult Dogs (>6months) Male/Female – Adoption fee is R500 and includes:

  • Up to date vaccinations
  • Deworming and de-fleaing before leaving the shelter
  • Sterilization
  • Microchip

Puppies (<6months) Male/Female – Adoption fee is R500 and includes:

  • First two vaccinations.  Should the pup leave our shelter before the second vaccination is due, you may bring the pup back for the second vaccination (included in the adoption fee) or you may opt to have this done at your private veterinary at YOUR OWN cost.
  • Up to date deworming and de-fleaing before leaving the shelter.
  • Sterilization at 6 months of age. Make arrangements with us to have him/her sterilized at our own vet clinic with no added costs to you. Should you opt to make use of your private veterinary that will be at YOUR OWN cost.
  • Microchip

Special note on puppies’ vaccinations:

Puppies need to get 3 vaccine injections before they reach 6 months age:
1st inoculation : for parvo, distemper, corona etc. + kennel cough (you need to ask for this last one) at 8 weeks

2nd inoculation : for booster normal vaccine and booster kennel cough + 1st rabies at 12 weeks
3rd inoculation : for booster normal vaccines, booster kennel cough (if vet says so) + booster rabies at 16 weeks

For this reason, if you adopt a puppy under 6 months, we will make sure that he/she got the last inoculation due to his/her age at the moment of the adoption, but all following treatments then become your responsibility and are at your own cost.

Adult Cats (>6months) Male/Female – Adoption fee is R500 and includes:

  • up to date vaccinations (for normal vaccination, leukemia, snuffles and rabies)
  • deworming before leaving the shelter
  • sterilization
  • microchip
  • basic medical care

Kittens (<6months) Male/Female – Adoption fee is R500 and includes:

  • 1st vaccination includes leukemia and snuffles at 8 weeks
  • deworming and de-fleaing before leaving the shelter
  • sterilization at 9 to 16 weeks, before the first heat cycle: you can of course decide to get it done through your own vet, but it is included in the R450, so if you bring the animal back to us, we will arrange to get him/her sterilized at our own vet clinic with no added costs to you. If the kitten is adopted before 12 weeks, the booster vaccination and rabies, will be for your own cost and can be done at the same time as sterilisation if the kitten is sterilised at our vet clinic.
  • microchip

Special note on kittens’ vaccinations:

Kittens need to get 3 vaccine injections before they reach 6 months of age:
1st inoculation : HCPCh vaccine includes leukemia and snuffles at 8 weeks
2nd inoculation : Booster HCPCh  leukemia & snuffles + 1st rabies at 13 weeks
3rd inoculation : for booster rabies at 17 weeks

For this reason, if you adopt a kitten under 6 months, we will make sure that he/she gets the last inoculation due at his/her age at the time of the adoption, but all following treatments then become your responsibility and are at your own cost.

More About us

The Lucky Lucy Foundation is a Non-Profit, Pro-life, Pro-Quality of Life organization that tries to relieve the plight of severely neglected and abused township and street animals. We are all about the social upliftment and education of impoverished children and adults in and around Cape Town, and have been since inception in 2010.

It was established on Jan 28, 2010, after our founding members discovered a pregnant dog, tied to a railway line with wire. As a result of this inhumane cruelty, Lucy (as she quickly became known) lost her front leg as a result of several trains passing over her. Lucky was added because  the trauma did not cause her death.

Lucky Lucy is an ambassador for the voiceless. We oppose any form of cruelty to animals, whether it is the physical abuse of a dog or inhumane methods of slaughter for human consumption. The Lucky Lucy Foundation is not just a small charity trying to save the world, but a stepping stone of hope for neglected and abused animals, a reducer of over-population and a beacon of light for destitute adults and children.

Sterilization

We focus our strengths, first and foremost on getting as many animals sterilized as we possibly can (funds permitting), be it a dog in a township, on the street scavenging for food, or a dog with an owner who can’t afford private veterinary fees. We do what we can to prevent the ’contribution’ of more animals ending up in already over-populated areas because there simply aren’t enough homes for them all. Our society is the reason that millions are spent to control and eliminate (euthanize) unwanted animals but this is a quick solution and doesn’t solve the issue as irresponsible breeding contributes to the problem. Shelters get over-burdened with the surplus of animals. We assist underprivileged or destitute owners with their pets in poor communities.

Education

EDUCATION NOT CONFISCATION – teaching of justice, respect and compassion for all life! We educate to overcome ignorance which promotes accountability and responsibility. The people in disadvantaged communities may not have the necessary knowledge because of a lack of education. This can become a vicious circle as the children may be raised ignorant of the need to sterilize animals, the need for good nutrition and the manner in which violence can change a pet. Often all that is required for change is to show people that there is a better way, we are their teachers.

Feeding

We also help the disadvantaged communities who can barely afford food for themselves, let alone for their pets. We visit weekly and provide food for the community and their pets. This however is not done merely as a hand out which could exacerbate the problem. Every person who has taken part in our education program and is willing to have their pet sterilized can expect help from us to feed themselves and their animals.

Social Responsibility & Upliftment

We believe in uplifting communities by providing them with the tools and skills to sustain themselves. Hand outs will only treat the symptom and not the cause and we prefer to offer a more sustainable approach. By teaching skills such as growing vegetable gardens and woodwork we equip people with the ability to feed themselves which contributes not only to their self-worth but to a happier community. Lucky Lucy gives of their time and whatever provisions they can to make this a reality.

Rescue, Rehabilitation and Re-homing

The animals that we rescue are the ‘NO HOPE LEFT’ ones. They come to our farm and here we rehabilitate them to become the perfect companion so that they can be re-homed successfully. We actively help the worst cases, the ones that would otherwise be sent over the rainbow bridge however this does not mean we accept suffering unnecessarily but everyone that comes our way will get the best chance at having a better life no matter how much time or money they may need.
