Opening Hours

Visits to our centre are strictly by appointment only between 10am and 15:30pm and we are closed to the public on Tuesdays.

This is necessary to ensure the ongoing rehabilitation and safety of our dogs whose needs must come first. Thank you for understanding.

Adoption Fee

Our adoption process begins with a comprehensive adoption application that needs to be completed. This helps us eliminate unsuitable dogs, and to shortlist the ones who we believe would best suit your lifestyle.

Once the application has been received, processed and approved, an appointment is set up for you to visit our centre to meet our dogs.  Our caregivers, who work with our dogs on a daily basis, will introduce you to the dogs in their care, and explain in detail their behavior patterns and personality characteristics.

The next step is a friendly visit to your home by our adoptions manager who will meet your family and any existing pets to ensure that the home is suitable and secure.

Once the home check is successfully completed, and a suitable dog has been selected, we arrange a “meet and greet” at the Dogtown Centre with the chosen doggy and your existing dogs, to make sure everybody gets along.

We do ask for a donation / adoption fee to help us cover the cost of sterilisation, vaccinations, deworming and microchipping, all of which is done before a dog goes to his/her new forever home.

Going home is the fun part!  Each adopted dog is taken to his or her new home by their respective caregiver, along with a booklet containing their likes and dislikes. In the adoption folder is a contract that must be signed by the adoptive parent and the Dogtown SA representative.

An important clause in this contract states that should the family at any time be unable to care for their adopted dog, for whatever reason, the dog must be returned to Dogtown SA.  We commit to our dogs for life.

Basic Requirements

We require proof of residence as well as positive identification. Applicants must be 21 years of age or older.

In order to qualify to adopt a dog from us, all your existing pets must be sterilized and all dogs have to be an integral part of the family.

It is also compulsory for pups to be enrolled in puppy school before going to their new homes.

More About us

Dogtown SA is a pro-life, animal rehabilitation centre, specialising in so-called “problem” dogs. We prefer to call them misunderstood dogs. We provide them with the best care and rehabilitation programmes, from behaviour modification to extensive medical treatments. This includes a full medical examinations, microchips, vaccinations and sterilisations. The dogs in our care are assessed and then an individual training programme is put into place by our 4 internal behaviourists. We aim to offer lifelong commitment to the dogs that come into our care and a lifetime of support to their new families.

Our focus is to help dogs that need our specific expertise and we take in dogs from other rescue centres who are struggling to home them because of a behaviour or medical problems.

We also have a retirement village for older dogs as a lot of the time older dogs with medical issues are dumped at centres around the country with less chance of finding lovebable homes.
